CORIOLANUS

Location

Whitney Humanities Center, Yale University

Date

January 2012

Role

Director

Shakespeare's Roman tragedy explores narcissistic grandiosity and fascist hubris
while training a knowing, satirical eye on enduring socio-political dynamics: the manipulability of the populace and the self-interest of their supposed representatives. The production featured historical costumes in a museum-like "white box" setting, as if Roman-era statuary had come to life to play out this political ego-drama. Images of classical, idealized femininity clashed with the tactical savvy and emotional brutalism of Coriolanus' mother Volumnia. Fight scenes unfolded to a bombastic techno score inspired by Beethoven's "Coriolan Overture."
