THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE

Location

Whitney Humanities Center, Yale University

Date

April 2011

Role

Director

Brecht's sweeping epic parable, staged with madcap dynamism, an original score evoking Georgian folk music, and a design concept that combined feudal and contemporary elements.

When Grusha saves the abandoned child, her transcendent act of conscience sets off a moral drama that entangles the lives of the powerful and the destitute. Inspired by the energy of the Arab Spring, the production summoned the exuberance of utopian possibility with an awareness that such socio-political moments - like the judgeship of "Azdak the Good" - always pass away, even as they change the world.
