Bertolt Brecht's harrowing, big-hearted play about the preciousness of goodness in a predatory world. The production steered clear of a fantastical orientalist aesthetic; sets and costumes gestured toward a historical China of the 1930s. The ascent of the gods at the end of the play was achieved with clearly visible aerial rigging - a theatrical instance of "laying bare the device" that Brecht would, hopefully, have enjoyed.
