Dawn King's THE TRIALS conjures a dystopian future in which climate breakdown and resource scarcity force the nations of the world to cull their populations. Teenage jurors are tasked with passing judgment on the life-choices made by “dinosaurs” (members of the older generation), and a guilty sentence means execution. The dramatic reality is bleak, but the play also points toward the potential for empathy and understanding to push their way up through the barren soil of a brittle, condemning ideology.
